About MedicAnalyze

Our Mission

MedicAnalyze makes public Medicaid payment data accessible and easy to understand. We believe healthcare cost transparency helps patients, researchers, and policymakers make more informed decisions.

Data Sources

All cost data comes from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Medicaid Provider Spending dataset. This publicly available dataset contains claims-level aggregate data for Medicaid-covered procedures across the United States.

Provider information (names, addresses, specialties) comes from the NPPES National Provider Identifier (NPI) Registry, also publicly available from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Methodology

We process the raw HHS dataset to produce useful cost comparisons:

  1. Procedure clustering: Related HCPCS billing codes are grouped into recognizable procedure categories (e.g., "MRI," "Blood Work," "Office Visit") for easier browsing.
  2. Geographic matching: Each provider's NPI is matched to their registered practice location to enable city-level comparisons.
  3. Cost aggregation: Average paid amounts are calculated from total Medicaid payments divided by total claims. We show the range (min–max) of individual provider averages within each city.
  4. Quality threshold: Pages are only generated when a procedure-city combination has at least 10 claims, ensuring statistical reliability.
